I BEGAN MY CAREER IN AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING BUT WAS ALWAYS VERY INTERESTED IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY AND FOLLOWED IT CLOSELY. EVERY OPPORTUNITY I HAD TO GO FLYING I TOOK!
One day I got an introductory flight and the feedback from the instructor was so positive that I gave a change of career a lot of thought and decided to follow my childhood dream.
Last February I received an email from my flight school that Kura had some openings for their BESTPILOT programme. I enrolled the following month. It really was an eyeopener. Whilst I had received some CRM (Crew Resource Management) training in the MCC I had already completed, and during my ATPL theory, is was minimal compared with the presentation during BESTPILOT. The programme was superb – it broadens your peripheral view of the environment you will work in. Kura really bridges the gap between flight training and actual demand of the airlines. I felt like a more complete and capable pilot after the course. Also, the interview preparation training was spot on; so thorough that you feel very confident!
I had my Flybe interview in August and 3 days later got the final call that I had passed the interview and grading. Happy days! I can’t thank Kura enough. Before my interview I had been back to the Training Centre in Stratford Upon Avon for final preparations (free of charge) and really felt the commitment of all the Kura crew to see you succeed. They make you feel you are part of a special family. Not a number, but a valued individual. I’m very proud to be a Kura ambassador.
Now I’m flying the line, every time I go up in the air, regardless of weather, I take a moment to enjoy the fact that I’m flying and I’m doing what I love to do. The Dash 8 is a remarkable aircraft and has some things to get your head around, but once you master her, she’s a pilot’s aeroplane and Flybe encourages manual flying to keep your skills at a high level. They are an amazing airline and really take care of you.
What I love most of all is that moment when you break through the clouds and enjoy the sun on a nice early morning. Especially if it was raining when you took off. Priceless!
